There are many people who when they hear the words “stun gun” they envision it to be a real gun, such as a handgun or pistol. Maybe they should call these things “stun devices.”

They are usually about the size of a pager, garage door opener, or close to that size. They are battery operated, and they don’t really “shoot” anything. What they do, is to emit a huge amount of electricity into the body of an assailant, or a “would be” assailant, that is, because when he tries to attack a person with a “stun device” he is in for the “shock” of his life! (Pun intended!)

These stun guns, also come in other forms such as stun batons, and there are some that are disguised as cell phones. Should we call them stun phones?

Anyway, this huge amount of electricity that is delivered into the body of the “would be” assailant, happens when the person who planned ahead and obtained the stun gun, presses the button, which causes the unit to make a very loud, and almost scary, crackling sound, and you might be able to see the bright blue current from one electrode to the other. However, immediately after pressing the button, the person defending themselves, touches these two electrodes to the body of the attacker, hopefully in the torso, and after a few seconds, the person has their central nervous system overloaded by trying to handle all of this electricity.

The person who got “stunned” will usually collapse to the ground at this point. They will be disabled for a temporary amount of time, perhaps twenty to forty minutes, and will not be able to do very much, while the near-victim is able to get away, get to safety, or get help!
